Spring Adventures on Hood Canal

Although the Pacific Northwest is known for its temperate rainforests accompanied by an abundant amount of green, with spring’s warmth, we can start to look forward to the colorful relief offered by the return of native flowers on Olympic forest trails. Spring adventures on Hood Canal offer opportunities to dive into exciting experiences around our waterways.

Verdant Greens and Wild Flowers

Spring is the best time of year to find the delicate jewel tones out here on the “wet” coast. As days get longer and weather gets warmer, take a ramble down one of our forested walks. Check out the beautiful two tier Murhut Falls. For a more adventurous alpine hike, with spectacular views and unique flora, try Mount Ellinor Trail. Spring hiking around Hood Canal and the surrounding areas of Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest offers breathtaking views and invigorating trails.

As snow begins to melt and wildflowers bloom, the landscapes transform into vibrant displays of nature. Popular trails such as the Lake Lena and Staircase Olympic National Park entrance trail network provide excellent opportunities for both casual walks and more challenging hikes.

The Pacific Rhododendron is found wild in drier parts of Hood Canal in the understory of coniferous forests. As Washington’s state flower, it can be seen along the Hood Canal on scenic Highway 101, following the winding curves of the fjord. For an especially spectacular showing of native rhododendrons, head up to the scenic outlook on Mount Walker.

Dive Deeper

Scuba diving in Hood Canal during the spring months is world renowned. The area offers a unique underwater experience characterized by improved water visibility. As the winter chill wanes, the waters begin to warm, leading to less stratification. This results in clearer water, making it an ideal time for divers to explore the rich marine life that thrives in the canal including GPO (Giant Pacific Octopus), wolf eels and schools of ancient rock cod.

When planning a dive in Hood Canal in spring, it’s essential to check local tide charts and weather forecasts to ensure optimal conditions. Additionally, early spring diving may require a thicker wetsuit or drysuit due to lingering cold water temperatures, but the rewarding visibility and abundance of marine life makes it worthwhile.
