Falling for Olympic Peninsula’s Hood Canal

Hood Canal is one of the Pacific Northwest’s most enchanting outdoor destinations. For families with kids in tow, this slender waterway framed by forests and mountains offers a rich mix of hiking, waterfalls, tide pools, beaches, and waterside adventures. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls or geoduck, wandering forest trails, or simply relaxing in a beachside cabin, Hood Canal is a canvas for nature-based memories.

Families who crave fresh air and simple pleasures will love Hood Canal’s beautifully varied adventure. From gentle forest paths to hidden waterfalls and calm seaside adventures, every day is a lesson in wonder.

Waterfalls

One of the region’s biggest draws for young adventurers is its accessible waterfalls—short hikes with big rewards. A scenic 15-minute drive from Hwy 101, Murhut Falls Trail follows a level path through moss-dripping trees to a two-tier tumbling waterfall. On warm days, the icy pool makes the perfect reward after a forest ramble. The round-trip hike is gentle enough for most children and as a bonus there are no passes needed—even the family pup is welcome!

Hood Canal Shorelines

On the south shore, Twanoh State Park is another under-the-radar gem. With more than 3,000 feet of shoreline and 2.5 miles of inland trails, families can stroll through second-growth woods, hunt for shells at low tide, or simply linger by the water’s edge.

Of course, Hood Canal isn’t just about forests and falls—its shoreline is part of the experience. Near Hoodsport, and along many points of the canal, the shallow waters at low tide reveal a hidden world of crabs, sea stars, and anemones. Bring a bucket and curiosity, and you’ll be exploring the whole tide! Calm waters make a perfect place for kids to kayak or paddleboard under close supervision. Local outfitter, Hood Canal Adventures, can provide guided tours or rentals with delivery to your cabin.

Family-friendly Stays

No family adventure is complete without a cozy place to share meals and board games after a day of tides, trails, and waterfalls. Here are a few family-friendly options worth considering.

Alderbrook Resort & Spa in Union seamlessly blends elevated lodging—rooms, cottages, and suites—with spectacular views and nature on their doorstep. Beyond the waterfront saltwater pool and spa plus dining options, Alderbrook’s nature trails invite families to explore the forest without even leaving the property.

For families looking for a more budget stay, Mike’s Beach Resort in Lilliwaup offers rustic accommodations ranging from waterfront cabins and family rooms to a glamping tent village. A big draw here, especially for kids, is the private U-Pick shellfish beach. Families can harvest clams and oysters then cook them at their cabin.

Just west of Hoodsport, The Glen Resort offers a relaxed atmosphere right on the canal. Accommodations range from a luxury house on the hill to cabins and rooms to RV sites. This family-friendly basecamp hosts picnic areas, beaches, trails, hot tubs, and a great room to gather in with live music and a pool table.

Family Events on Hood Canal

Wherever you lay your heads at sunset, the days will be packed with memory-making moments including unique events. The Hama Hama Oyster Rama, in April, is the epitome of a family beach celebration. In May, head to Matlock for the Old Timers Fair and to Shelton for the Mason County Forest Festival. Hoodsport’s Fjordin Crossin is in June. The event features a paddle across Hood Canal for all ages as well as kids activities, music and local vendors right on the beach!

Beyond these anchors, each season brings a lineup that celebrates music, art and community. Later in the season book your trip for the Grapeview Art & Water Festival—a celebration of local art and music. Or linger for Bluegrass From The Forest, where tunes and workshops under towering firs make for a uniquely Northwest soundtrack to a family camping trip.
